Cat statue: the stylised silhouette, not the realistic portrait

A 6 cm cat statue is not meant to be viewed up close: it is read from a distance. Why the stylised silhouette wins over portraiture, which colour for which interior, where to place it. From 3 €, printed to order in Guérande.

By L'atelier RE3DLINE

A successful cat statue does not try to look like your cat: it keeps its line. At 6 cm tall, the details of a realistic portrait are only visible nose-to-nose, whereas a stylised silhouette is recognised from the other end of the room. Our Cat Statue follows this principle: 3 €, around twenty colours, made to order in our Guérande workshop.

At six centimetres, detail disappears

A 6 cm cat statuette lives on a shelf, a desk, a bookshelf. You rarely look at it up close: you see it from the sofa, from the doorway, in passing. At that distance, everything that makes a realistic portrait vanishes. The whiskers, the fur pattern, the eye colour all blend into a single spot. What remains is the outline.

So it is the outline that must be right. A cat is recognised by few things: pointed ears, a way of holding its head, a way of standing. A realistic cat sculpture bets on detail, which you only see up close. A silhouette bets on form, which you read from everywhere. On an object this size, the second bet is the only one that holds.

What the Cat Statue keeps

The Cat Statue exists in a single size, 6 cm, at the price of 3 €. Its product page describes it as a pared-down silhouette. It is printed in a single colour, and its surface is crossed by fine vertical striations. It represents neither a breed nor your cat in particular. It represents a cat, and that is what allows it to find its place in very different interiors.

It shares the dimensions of the Dog Statue: same height, same price, same striations. The two pieces work together without one overwhelming the other, we return to this below.

PLA does not pretend to be fur

All our statues are printed in biosourced PLA, a material of plant origin made notably from maize starch. We covered its environmental impact in Is PLA really ecological?

A printed piece that tries to imitate fur ends up looking like plastic imitating fur. A silhouette imitates nothing. It leaves the material as it comes out of the printer: a clean surface, rhythmed by its striations, in the colour chosen. The cat is not copied, it is drawn.

There is also a practical reason. A statuette placed on a shelf moves with each dusting. The fewer details it has in relief, the fewer places it offers for breakage. PLA is rigid rather than fragile, as we explain in Is a 3D printed object really solid and durable?

Side lighting reveals the relief

The product page says it in one sentence: the manufacturing gives "subtle relief" that catches the light. On a 6 cm piece, this relief is not visible under a ceiling light shining straight down. It appears when light comes from the side.

So position the statue so that the light source is lateral: a window to the side of the shelf, a lamp placed at the same height, an LED string in winter. Each striation then casts its shadow, and the cat's outline stands out from the background. Light colours like Ivory White or Beige show this play of shadows best. Dark colours like Matte Black work differently: backlit, in front of a light wall, they reduce the cat to its silhouette, and it is the outline alone that speaks.

Where these striations come from, and why we leave them visible: we told that story in Dog statue: the silhouette rather than the portrait.

The placements that suit it

The right placement is one from which you see it from a distance, without it getting lost.

In a bookshelf. Between two rows of books or in front of their spines, the silhouette breaks the alignment. A cat among the books: the image is understood without explanation.

On a desk. At the foot of the screen or next to a pencil pot, it takes the place of a photo without its frame.

In the hallway. On the console, next to the catchall tray, it welcomes without cluttering. To choose that catchall tray, see Catchall tray: which size for the hallway, the desk and the bedside table.

On a window sill. Yes for the light, no for the full summer sun behind the glass: PLA begins to soften around 55 to 60 °C. A sill that does not receive direct sun suits it better.

One colour for each interior

The Cat Statue comes in around twenty colours, and its price stays at 3 € regardless of the colour chosen. The choice is therefore made on a single criterion: the room where it will live.

A white and light wood interior. Two opposite options. Ivory White or Beige for a statue that blends into the shelf and only reveals itself in side lighting. Matte Black for the opposite effect: a graphic cat, cut cleanly, that is seen from the entrance to the room.

A dark interior or dark wall. Black disappears on black. Here, it is Ivory White or Marble Grey that makes the silhouette exist.

An already coloured interior. Matte Pink, Turquoise Blue, Matte Yellow or Lavender Purple make the statue a point of colour. Pick up a shade already present in the room, a cushion, a poster, a vase, so that the cat looks as if it has always been there.

The cat and the dog, a matching pair

In a home that has both animals, the question settles itself. The Cat Statue and the Dog Statue are both 6 cm, cost 3 € each and come in the same colour range.

Two ways to pair them. In the same colour, they form a pair: the repetition of colour makes the difference in silhouettes stand out. In two colours, each animal keeps its identity, and a light tone against a dark tone reads better than two bright colours side by side.

Composing a scene with other statues

At 6 cm, the cat benefits from being placed next to a taller piece. The statues collection offers several, all described on their product page as pared-down or minimalist silhouettes.

The Family Statues, from 10 €, represent a couple and their children, in four versions: with one, two, three or four children. Place the cat at their feet: the family is complete, pet included. The Couple Statue 1 (13 cm, 6 €) and the Couple Statue 2 (14 cm, 9 €) lend themselves to the same game for a two-person household. The Mother's Day Statue (13 cm, 4 €) and the Guardian Angel With Child Statue (13 cm, 8 €) complete the range.

The height difference, 6 cm against 13 or 14 cm, is enough to distinguish the animal from the figures without it disappearing.

A cat statuette to give

At 3 €, the Cat Statue lends itself to small gestures: a thank you to the person who looked after your cat during the holidays, a nod to a friend who has just adopted one, another piece for someone who collects cats.

The colour makes up most of the gift. If you do not know the interior of the person, Ivory White and Beige are the easiest to place.

One clarification, to avoid disappointment: the statue does not reproduce a specific cat, and we do not make portraits from photos. For a gift in the animal's name, it is the Personalised Bowl that allows it: personalised with the name, in sizes S, M and L, from 18 €, designed for dogs as well as cats.

Printed after your order, in the colour chosen

No statue waits in stock. Your order arrives at our Guérande workshop, the spool of the chosen colour is mounted on a printer, then the piece is printed, deburred, checked and packaged. Allow 5 to 7 days of manufacturing before dispatch, then the delivery time. For a birthday or a specific date, account for both.

The entire family of silhouettes is gathered in the statues collection. How the workshop works is described in An hour in the RE3DLINE workshop. You run a shop and are looking for an animal series for your shelves: our professionals page details what we offer. For any other question, write to us.

Frequently asked questions

What size is the cat statue?
The Cat Statue exists in a single size, 6 cm tall. It is a format for shelf, desk or bookshelf. It is the same height as the Dog Statue, which allows you to place them side by side.
How much does a cat statuette cost, and does colour change the price?
The Cat Statue costs 3 €. The price is the same in each of the around twenty colours offered, including Ivory White, Beige, Matte Black, Matte Pink and Turquoise Blue. Delivery is added to the price of the piece.
Can you make a statue of my cat from a photo?
No, we do not make custom portraits from photos. The Cat Statue is a stylised silhouette, drawn as a decorative object. For an object with your animal's name, the Personalised Bowl bears its name, from 18 €.
Which colour should I choose for a cat statue?
Choose based on the room, not the cat. On a white shelf, Ivory White or Beige blend into the decor, Matte Black cuts out a graphic silhouette. On a dark wall, Ivory White or Marble Grey make the shape stand out.
Can a PLA cat statue go in the sun or outdoors?
It is made for indoors. The biosourced PLA it is printed from begins to soften around 55 to 60 °C: avoid outdoors and full summer sun behind glass. Sheltered from direct sun, it keeps its shape.
What is the lead time to receive a cat statue?
Allow 5 to 7 days of manufacturing before dispatch, then delivery time. The statue is printed to order in our Guérande workshop: nothing is stocked, the piece is launched for you in the colour chosen.
