A good housewarming gift is a piece that finds its place in an interior you don't yet know, and that serves from the first week. A vase, a catchall tray for the hallway, LED candle holders, a couple statue: at our workshop, from €3 to €38, in around twenty colours, made to order in our Guérande workshop.
A gift for a home you don't yet know
A housewarming poses a problem that other invitations don't. You're offering an object for a place you're discovering that very evening, or that you've only seen in photos. You don't know what colour the walls are, what's still missing and what was bought the day before.
The bottle and the bouquet sidestep the difficulty: they disappear in a few days. The housewarming gift that makes a mark does the opposite. It's a piece you find on a console or a shelf six months later, and that recalls the move-in every time you see it. To get there, it must neither impose a style nor clutter a home still full of boxes.
What makes a decorative piece stay
Three criteria are enough to sort through gift ideas.
It has a use. An object that serves finds a place. An object that only decorates waits for you to find it one. A vase receives flowers, a catchall tray receives keys, a candle holder receives an LED. Even empty, they retain a readable function.
It stays compact. In a flat where you're still unpacking, a small piece sits anywhere and moves effortlessly. Our vases rise to 23 cm at most, our couple statues to 13 and 14 cm.
It suits an unknown interior. This is the most difficult criterion, and colour settles it. We return to this below.
The vase: a piece for the first living-room table
The vase is the safest housewarming gift, because it serves with or without flowers. The first bouquet of the evening finds its place there, and empty, it holds a shelf as an object in its own right. Our vases range from €14 to €38 and rise up to 23 cm.
For a first gift, the Shizu is the most accessible: €14 in 18 cm, €24 in 23 cm, soft curves and a finely ribbed texture. The Hikari and the Kage, Japanese-inspired, cost €20 in 18 cm and €35 in 23 cm. To make an impression, the Nami (23 cm, €33) undulates like a wave, and the Tama (23 cm, €36 or €38 depending on finish) plays on a pronounced vertical relief.
A word on size. For a home you don't know, the 18 cm sits on a coffee table, a ledge or a bedside table. The 23 cm requires a sideboard or a console. The small format takes fewer risks.
Our vases are made watertight at the workshop by a technical resin that impregnates the walls: they receive the water of a fresh bouquet. We explain this in can you put water in a 3D-printed vase.
The catchall tray: the first thing you put down when you come home
In a new home, keys don't yet have a place. They end up on the worktop, at the bottom of a pocket, on a box. A catchall tray placed in the hallway settles the question from the first evening. It's the piece that serves the quickest, and the one you use several times a day.
The Gyroid Catchall Tray set (€25) has an advantage for a gift: it doesn't presume the layout. It brings together three formats, a square tray for the hallway, an oblong tray for the desk, a round dish for the bedside table. The new occupants distribute the three pieces as they see fit. The base is an openwork mesh printed in a second colour, which holds keys where you put them.
The right format for each room of the house is detailed in catchall tray: which format for hallway, desk and bedside table.
LED candle holders for the first evenings
In the first weeks, not all the light fittings are installed. A candle holder brings a low, warm light on a table or a shelf, without waiting for the electrician.
Our candle holders are used with an LED tealight candle, never with a flame. They are printed in biosourced PLA, a material that begins to soften around 55 to 60 °C, and each product page states this in red. For a gift, it's an argument: an LED stays lit without supervision, among boxes as in a child's room. The detail is in 3D-printed candle holder: which candle to put in it.
The Shiro (€14) is the only tall format, Ø 4 cm by 14 cm, with a vertical texture. The Ondéa Candle Holder (€3) follows undulating curves, the Bubble (€3) rounded volumes, the Lunar (€4) a circular design with textured relief. The Cœur (€3) has the shape its name announces. Add a few LED tealight candles to the package: the gift lights up that very evening.
For a couple moving in: a statue for two
When the housewarming is that of a couple moving in together, the gift can say so. Our two couple statues are minimalist pieces, not portraits: they speak of union without representing anyone in particular.
The Couple Statue 1 (13 cm, €6) plays on simple lines. The Couple 2 Statue (14 cm, €9) is distinguished by worked vertical lines and a textured surface. Both are configured in two colours, chosen from the same twenty or so colours, without changing the price.
At this price, the statue accompanies another gift rather than replacing it. With a vase in the same colour, it forms a set for the living-room shelf. It also sits on a bedside table or in a bookcase, at eye level. To pair it with the other statues in the collection, see cat statue: the stylised silhouette, not the realistic portrait.
Three budgets, from €3 to €38
The amount of a housewarming gift depends on who's giving it: a single guest, a couple, colleagues pooling together. Here's a piece or a set per tier, at product-page prices. For the holidays, the same tier method applies in Christmas gift ideas made in France, by budget.
Up to €10. An Ondéa Candle Holder, Bubble or Cœur at €3, the Lunar at €4, or a couple statue at €6 or €9. The Ondéa Candle Holder, Bubble and Lunar together cost €10.
From €14 to €25. The Shizu in 18 cm (€14), the Shinto (18 cm, €15 in textured finish, €18 in striped finish), the Shiro (€14), or the Gyroid Catchall Tray set (€25), which equips three rooms of the house at once.
From €28. The Neki (17 cm, €28 in curved bowl, €29 in straight bowl), the Nami (€33), the Tama (€36 or €38), or a set: an 18 cm Shizu, a Shiro and a Couple Statue 1 make €34.
Choosing the colour without knowing the interior
This is the question that blocks the most decorative gifts, and it has a simple answer: when you don't know the room, choose a neutral. Ivory White, Beige, Wood, Marble Sandstone or Marble Grey suit a white wall as well as raw parquet, and contradict no furniture.
If you know the hosts' tastes, a deep tone like Matte Black, Khaki Green or Deep Blue stands out sharply against a light wall. Keep bright shades, Matte Orange or Turquoise Blue, for friends whose interior you've already seen.
For a multi-piece gift, two rules: a single colour for different shapes, or a single shape in several tones of the same family. Colour doesn't change the price of any of the pieces mentioned here. The palette is presented in detail in colour-personalised 3D vase: compose your own.
PLA and heat: the precaution to pass on with the gift
All these pieces are printed in biosourced PLA, a plant-based material made notably from maize starch. The colour is in the material, not painted on the surface: rubbing doesn't reveal an underlayer of another shade.
Their limit is heat. PLA begins to soften around 55 to 60 °C: no radiator edge, no full sun behind a bay window in summer, no dishwasher. Vases are washed by hand, in cold water. It's a line to slip in with the gift, so the new occupants know.
Recycled PETG, more heat-tolerant, will join our workshop in the coming months. It won't change the candle-holder rule, which will remain LED objects. The comparison of the two materials is in PLA or PETG: which material for which decorative object.
Printed after your order, in time for the evening
None of these pieces waits in stock. Your order arrives at our Guérande workshop, the spool of the chosen colour is mounted on a printer, then the piece is printed, deburred, checked and packed. Allow 5 to 7 days of production before dispatch, then the delivery time.
For a housewarming on a fixed date, take both into account: ordering two weeks before the evening leaves a comfortable margin. It's advice, not a guaranteed date. For any question of timing, write to us.
The pieces in this article are found in the vases, home accessories, candle holders and statues collections. The workshop's operation is recounted in an hour in the RE3DLINE workshop. For a bulk order, our trade page details what we offer.
Frequently asked questions
- What gift should I give for a housewarming?
- A piece that is useful and fits an interior you don't yet know: a vase, a catchall tray for the entrance, LED candle holders or, for a couple, a couple statue. If you haven't seen the home, choose a neutral colour such as Ivory White, Beige or Marble Sandstone.
- What budget should I plan for a housewarming gift?
- At our workshop, from €3 to €38. The Ondéa, Bubble and Cœur candle holders cost €3, the couple statues €6 and €9, the set of three Gyroid catchall trays €25, and the vases range from €14 (Shizu in 18 cm) to €38 (Tama in ribbed-bottom finish). The colour does not change the price.
- Which colour should I choose for a gift when I don't know the interior?
- A neutral: Ivory White, Beige, Wood, Marble Sandstone or Marble Grey. These shades match a white wall as well as raw parquet. Each piece comes in around twenty colours, at no extra cost.
- Can I put a real candle in these candle holders?
- No. Our candle holders are printed in PLA, which begins to soften around 55 to 60 °C: they are used only with an LED tealight candle, never with a flame. An LED can remain lit without supervision, making it a risk-free gift for a new home.
- Can a 3D-printed vase hold water?
- Yes. Our vases are made watertight at the workshop by a technical resin that impregnates the walls: they hold water for a fresh bouquet. Use cold water and wash them by hand, never in the dishwasher.
- How far in advance should I order a housewarming gift?
- Allow 5 to 7 days of production before dispatch, then delivery: each piece is made to order in our workshop in Guérande. Ordering two weeks before the party leaves a comfortable margin. This is advice, not a guaranteed date.
